Summer 2015 Ruth R. Banks Green Legal Intern Placement Program

One of the Greater Washington Area Chapter (GWAC)’s major contributions has been the establishment and endowment of the Ruth A. Banks Green Legal Intern Placement Program (LIPP). In 1986 GWAC instituted the LIPP in order to procure challenging summer employment opportunities for African-American female law students. GWAC places African-American female law students entering their second or third year of law school in legal internships with various cooperating employers in the District of Columbia metropolitan area.

The intern receives a minimum stipend of $15 per hour. The intern is paid by the participating employer. In some cases, GWAC is able to subsidize up to half of the intern stipend. This is made possible via the gratuity of the GWAC Foundation and grants from the Women’s Bar Association.

The LIPP provides reciprocal benefit to both employers and law students. LIPP interns are provided unique training and educational opportunities to enhance their educational and professional maturation. Employers are provided with candidates whose interests and experience are commensurate with the employers’ needs. Employers enjoy valuable legal assistance without having to perform all of the recruiting duties on their own.

Summer 2015 Mentorship Program

Mentoring Matters is a summer mentorship program for rising 2Ls of diverse backgrounds who plan to practice law in the Nation’s Capital. The program is designed to provide participants with information about the on-campus interviewing process, an understanding of DC law firms, and an opportunity to network with Steptoe & Johnson lawyers. Mentors meet informally with their mentees to discuss the best way to approach the upcoming interview season, how summer programs work, interviewing strategies, and general questions related to the practice of law. Mentoring Matters participants are also invited to attend firm-sponsored professional development workshops, seminars and informal gatherings such as our annual Multicultural Attorneys at Steptoe (MAS) summer reception.
