Litigation Intern

The legal internships at the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth will give law students an opportunity to work on the cutting edge of constitutional and human rights law.The goal of the Campaign is to support litigation and legislative strategies to abolish life-without-parole sentences for juveniles in the United States and ensure that all children have a meaningful opportunity to obtain release once they have been rehabilitated.

The litigation intern will help support CFSY by drafting legal memos for the litigation team, including analysis of state laws relating to extreme sentences for youth, parole and review eligibility for youth, and mitigating sentencing factors for courts to consider once a juvenile has been tried and convicted in adult court. The work of the litigation intern will be integral toward our broader strategy of eliminating life without parole as a sentencing option for juveniles.

Summer 2015 Internship

The District of Columbia Rental Housing Commission seeks 2-3 highly qualified summer interns to assist the Commissioners with reviewing case files and drafting written decisions. Typical assignments over the course of a summer may include researching and drafting legal memoranda in preparation for a hearing, and advising the Commissioners regarding the applicable legal precedent related to cases that are pending. Depending on their schedule, interns may have the opportunity to attend hearings, draft decisions for the Commission’s review, and work directly with the Commissioner’s to resolve a case on appeal.

Applicants should be rising second or third year law students, preferably with an interest in rental housing policy, landlord-tenant law, or administrative law. The ideal candidate will possess excellent research and writing skills, proficiency using Lexis Nexis for legal research, the ability to learn and work independently, and a demonstrated interest in Government or public service work.

Summer 2015 Joan Bauer Domestic Violence Internship(paid)

Vermont Legal Aid seeks a law student for its Joan Bauer Domestic Violence Fellowship.  Second year law students are preferred, although first year students will be considered. The intern will work on a special project identified by the Poverty Law Project.  The internship will provide an opportunity to be part of an exciting, friendly, pro-active legal services program as well as the chance to gain a wide range of experience.  This may include direct representation of domestic violence victims under student practice rules, helping to draft pro se information regarding family court, drafting information for our website, and participating in meetings with public and/or non-profit organizations.  The position will be located in Springfield, VT.  Applicants must have a car.  This position last for 10 weeks and has a $4,000 stipend.

Public Interest Advocacy Fellow

Taxpayers Against Fraud Education Fund (TAFEF) is a nonprofit, public-interest organization dedicated to combating fraud against federal and state governments through promotion of whistleblower reward laws and programs. TAFEF works to counter fraud in fields and industries such as Medicare and Medicaid, defense contracting, educational loans, housing and other publicly-financed programs, as well as in the tax, securities and commodities areas. This one-year fellowship is a tremendous opportunity for a recent college graduate who is contemplating a career in the legal field. The fellow will assist in-house and TAFEF-member attorneys with research projects related to the qui tam provisions of the federal and state False Claims Act laws, and the IRS, SEC and CFTC whistleblower programs. The position is full-time with an annual salary of $30,000, plus full benefits.

Summer 2015 Privacy Intern

The purpose of the Federal Information Privacy Internship Program is to give students an opportunity to learn about federal programs and policies with a focus on the application of privacy laws, regulations and policies. The internship will equip students with the skills and knowledge to make a significant contribution to Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA’s) privacy program and public health mission.

Privacy interns will learn about the major FDA programs: foods, drugs, devices, biologics, veterinary products, tobacco and enforcement. The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) for the Department of Forensic Sciences for the District of Columbia is looking for first and second year law students for an internship during summer 2015. The OGC handles all the legal work for the Department of Forensic Sciences, and coordinates with other agencies including the United States Attorney’s Office, the DC Office of the Attorney General and the Defense Bar in criminal matters.  Interns handle a variety of criminal, employment and labor law related issues.

The position is unpaid. Although program dates are flexible, the selected applicant must have a flexible schedule, and be able to work a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Summer 2015 Judicial Internship in the Chambers of Hon. Erik P. Christian

Judge Christian is seeking interns for Summer 2015.  He will be serving as the Presiding Judge of the Court’s Probate and Tax Division; in addition, he handles post-conviction criminal matters as they arise, such as 23-110 motions and probation show cause hearings.  This is a great opportunity to gain research and writing experience, and to become familiar with the workings of a dynamic and fast-paced court.  Interns will conduct research, draft memos and orders, and assist with administrative tasks as necessary.  There will also be ample opportunity to observe courtroom proceedings.

Candidates should have excellent academic credentials after completion of at least one or two years of law school, strong research skills, and the ability to write clearly and concisely. Internships are unpaid but, pursuant to individual school guidelines, students may be able to earn academic credit.
